Sarah is a certified Association of Nature and Forest Therapy guide. The certification indicates that she is a highly qualified guide who expertly facilitates immersive forest bathing experiences. Her deep understanding of the therapeutic benefits of nature allows her to create transformative connections between individuals and the natural world.

Sarah has been a popular sociology professor at Georgetown University for over 15 years. She has won numerous teaching awards and receives fabulous student reviews year after year.

With her sociological imagination and her expertise in positive psychology, flourishing, and wellness,  Sarah provides a unique perspective on forest therapy.

What is Forest Therapy?

Forest therapy, also known as forest bathing, involves immersing oneself in nature thereby promoting physical and mental well-being. It is a mindful and intentional experience that helps people engage with the natural environment using all of their senses. Through forest therapy, participants can experience the therapeutic benefits of being in nature, such as reduced stress levels, improved mood, enhanced immune function, and increased mindfulness.

The Experience

The walk includes an introduction to forest therapy, invitations to activities such as independent wandering and sitting interspersed with the opportunity to share experiences. Mats or stools will be provided, and a special tea ceremony with snacks will be held at the conclusion.

Locations: Two-hour walks can be scheduled on trails near Old Rag Mountain (in Sperryville, Virginia).

Old Rag is not the tallest mountain in the Blue Ridge mountain range but it is the most popular — by far! The mountain is located less than two hours from Washington, D.C. and one hour from Charlottesville, VA.
